Recs if you like Flyaway...

These are books that don't rush to impress you. They simmer while the author adds in the layers. They may confuse you or bore you at first - but if you give them time to cook you'll end up with a delicious meal of a book!

Always taking recommendations! If you are recommending a series - the layers need to come together by the end of the first book (not half way through the series).

Shorter books (under 200 pages) that are part of at least one quest. Many are also in the public domain, making them easily accessible when you want to grind for that next badge.

Speculative (sci-fi, fantasy, horror etc.) novellas less than 200 pages long that are either standalone or read like a standalone story

Books where memories are lost, gained, preserved, encountered, or otherwise altered through means that are not of this world. Work in progress, suggestions always welcome!

(See pinned comment for book/look pairings). For those books that are lush, esoteric, perhaps a bit encrusted, convoluted, dense and/or lyrical; books that Commit To The Bit. Anything with something to say and a strong aesthetic sense that reinforces it; anything that's perhaps a bit weird and not afraid to take literary/artistic risks. Bonus if you can't figure out what it's supposed to mean 🙂‍↕️. Suggestions always welcome - feel free to give me a book to find a look for, or post a book/look pairing you came up with yourself! ❣️

Horror books with a page count of 200 pages or less.

Before we started defining novellas by word count, they were defined as being any book less than 200 pages. Source: my Analysis of Short Stories & Literature professor in community college. I loved that class. But he loved James Joyce. So, ymmv, I guess.

(Broadly defined) Poetic, dreamy, strange, odd fantasy/sci-fi. Doesn’t have to be all of these things at once, mostly it’s fantasy/sci-fi that ‘breaks the norm’ (in style, prose and story)- whatever that means. Or books wonderfully odd, in any sort of way.

I’m not such a fast reader, neither do I have the golden touch finding only books that fit in this list… ‘Breaking the norm’ can be seen as rather subjective, so I’d love any suggestion that you feel fit (and why do you feel they fit?).

If we are going to do Qwordy's the Hardest Reading Challenge You'll Ever Do 3.0 - we should probably get some Pagebound badges along the way! I'm specifically going to be adding books from Quests and readalongs that I think matches at least one of these cover prompts: craft, food, motion, biomes/landscapes, animals, weather.

Some good books I've read that center heavily around the dynamics and relationships between siblings, especially in larger families

SFFH novellas for when you don't have the time for an 800 page epic but crave that mineral. rich worlds and characters that linger in your mind. includes queer, diverse, intersectional reads. Recs welcome, this is a work of love in progress ✨

Books of artful writing and beautiful prose; like a fairytale come to life

God loves you, but not enough to save you from these stories. Ethel Cain & Preacher’s Daughter vibes/inspired fiction

This is a list of short form horror that is meant to represent a variety of subgenres and styles within the horror genre. The list includes short stories, short story collections and novellas under 200 pages

If you're not sure where to start, or what subgenre or style a particular work represents, I encourage you to come ask in the comments! My goal with this list is to make horror more accessible and less intimidating for people unfamiliar with the genre 🖤

always accepting suggestions for books with a heart on the cover.

protagonists with amnesia or memory loss trying to figure out what happened/is going on

Bite-sized books you can read in a single sitting.

Fiction and non-fiction that feels like baking heat, chirping crickets, and the harsh glare of the sun.

Books that can be a little weird, a little silly, or a little sinister. Just like Cosmo Sheldrake. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes haunting, sometimes airy, and sometimes dark. But always distinct, strange, different, and beautiful. ❤️‍🩹 (And one just cuz it was written by his brother)
