Nothing But Blackened Teeth

Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

Cassandra Khaw's Nothing But Blackened Teeth is a gorgeously creepy haunted house tale, steeped in Japanese folklore and full of devastating twists. A Heian-era mansion stands abandoned, its foundations resting on the bones of a bride and its walls packed with the remains of the girls sacrificed to keep her company. It’s the perfect wedding venue for a group of thrill-seeking friends. But a night of food, drinks, and games quickly spirals into a nightmare. For lurking in the shadows is the ghost bride with a black smile and a hungry heart. And she gets lonely down there in the dirt. Effortlessly turning the classic haunted house story on its head, Nothing but Blackened Teeth is a sharp and devastating exploration of grief, the parasitic nature of relationships, and the consequences of our actions.

I think there are a lot of people that will like this. But I didn't.

I liked the premise and the descriptions were vivid. I didn’t like any of the characters. The humor in this didn’t land. It took me out of the story. Constantly making jokes about classic horror tropes just didn’t work and made the story feel silly instead of scary. I think this edit could have made the story truly sickening and haunting.

The writing felt a bit pretentious, but didn’t match the maturity of the characters. At the same time the dialogue felt forced and immature. Big words just for the sake of it, lots of metaphors that felt unnecessary. I don’t know, I’m confused. All I know is that I wanted to like it, but didn’t.
