Regine Abel

Enjoyment: 2.0Quality: 2.5Characters: 2.0Plot: 2.0

Tiny, sassy, but oh so fierce Rihanna is condemned to a twenty-year sentence on the most savage prison planet in the sector for a crime she didn’t commit. On the day of her transfer, she’s offered a deal to commute her sentence: an arranged marriage with a grumpy orc-minotaur who has muscles for days, devilish red eyes, and an insufferably smart mouth. Despite his species’ reputation for being violent brutes, Rihanna soon finds herself drawn to the gentle giant that lurks beneath his terrifying appearance. Fearsome, savage, and yet so fluffy When the agency informs Zatruk he’s been matched, the last thing he expects is for his mate to be such a tiny human. With his people rapidly entering blood rage, and the looming threat of war, he needs a queen to stand by his side as he strives to save his people, not a delicate flower. But he soon discovers that behind her fragile appearance, his little female hides a fierce and dauntless soul, with a sassy attitude that stirs him in unexpected ways. With time running out, will Rihanna be the blessing he needs to achieve the peace his people desperately desire, or will they self-destruct?

This book is a little difficult for me to review because I have some thoughts about it that require more care to discuss, and I'm not sure I'm able to do that right now. What I will say is that this was definitely my least favorite of the three Regine Abel books I've read so far. Partly because I didn't like these characters as much, partly because this series really does follow the same basic story outline as the others, and I'm bored with it. But mostly because this book felt really icky to me in terms of how Zatruk's community is described, as well as the dynamic between him and Rihanna. At some point, I want to talk about this in depth and really delve into what I felt reading this and the questions it brought up for me, but for now, you can peruse my notes and highlights and get an idea of what bothered me. I'm disappointed because I maintain that Regine Abel is a wonderful storyteller, and I do still plan on exploring her series. But this book in particular kept grinding my gears to the point where things I might not have been frustrated with before were really annoying me now. It was a let down.
