A renowned Japanese honkaku (authentic/fair-play) mystery series by Yukito Ayatsuji, featuring eccentric, themed, and often isolated houses designed by a mad architect. The series focuses on complex puzzles, locked-room mysteries, and deductive reasoning, featuring detective Shimada Kiyoshi.
Note: The Fifth book is expected to come up by October 2026. As pagebound allows atleast 5 books, I have placed a similar book of a different author, in the collection.
Enjoy the Japanese House Murders!

random question but do these books need to be read in order? as in are the storylines chronological and related?
Yes the storyline is in chronological order and often times you will see the author refering to other cases in the subsequent books. But every book is a standalone mystery and new characters are introduced everytime. Only the detective, and sometimes some side characters, are common as it's a series.
A new book coming out in 2026 explains this series’ revival. I’ve seen it in a few book stores lately and I was surprised. Also the newest book is on Pagebound,it just doesn’t have a cover. It’s called the “Black Cat House Murders”
Yes. Although Goodreads gives an early 2027 release
