Great list, thank you for this! (Also thank you moss-mylk for directing me to this list) Some of these look really fun. Which are your faves?

Also, maybe you can change “French” to Francophone? Not sure if it would have same vibe, but implies more that they’re in the French language as opposed to from France :)

Thank you for your suggestion, I updated the title! I'm feeling a little bit stupid as "francophone" is also a word in French haha

Some of the books listed here are only on my TBR so keep this in mind. I really loved Ewilan, this one is part of a trilogy. The author wrote another trilogy with one of the characters. It's well known I think, and fun fact: someone did a PhD thesis on these books (kind of) a few years ago. I really enjoyed la passe miroir by Christelle Dabos.

These days I mostly read adult novels and many of the recs here are YA. One adult series I really enjoyed is la guilde des ombres. However, this one is a dark fantasy and very graphic. There are a lot of sex scenes - usually it's not something I'm fond of - and some of these scenes are... Problematic (not the exact right word given the author does not endorse the behavior of one particular character but it's not for everyone IMO)

Two main things:

  • the list title can be misleading as some authors are from Belgium or other countries. If someone has a better title in mind to reflect this, let me know
  • unfortunately, this list includes mostly white authors. I find it way way way easier to read diversely in english and it has a lot to do with the publication landscape in France imo. However, I'm sure there are plenty of bipoc french-speaking authors to rec that I am not aware of. So... if some of you have some recs from bipoc french-speaking authors, I would happily include these books (they only need to be fantasy or dystopia).
