Lovely, lovely story with lovely, lovely illustrations. I was talking to moss-mylk about it, and we both decided that, despite being happy with the ending and length, we would both love if it became a series! There is so much potential with the characters, from familial development to friendship development, that it makes me want to read more and more of it. The story building also had very strong potential, and I would really love to get even a prequel or spin off just to learn more about the world. Iâm a little sad at how greedily I consumed it; I knew it was short, but I whizzed through the first half until I realized how far Iâd come, and then I slowed down to properly savor it.
As others have said, the twist at the end was done well and I did text moss-mylk with a very long âNOOOOâ when I realized what was coming đ as much as what the twist would be was clear, WHO it would be related to was not clear, which is perfect for the audience, whether child or adult. In terms of audience, what I particularly appreciated was that the characters were fleshed out enough for an adult to enjoy, and it also allowed for connection.
I would absolutely read more from this author/illustrator! I am also considering buying a physical copy (if they exist) for my schoolâs library. I know my students would really like it!

not sure if iâll get a chance to re-read any of this during the readalong but i hope people reading keep an open mind to what camus was trying to portray through meursaultâs state of mind and detached emotional state! one of the more interesting unreliable narrators imo

Hello all! I took French for 15 years and Iâm totally fluent especially when it comes to listening, but Iâve lost the habit of speaking and reading proper literature outside of colloquial speak so I really want to get back into it. My fear is to lose it! I own a lot of classic âadultâ French literature (Madame bovary, the stranger, Cyrano, nana, suite francaise, etc) but I want to ease my way into the language so Iâm looking for suggestions on your fave middle grade or late teen French books (even if you read it in English no problem, Iâll look for a copy in the original French).
I also have A Winterâs Promise which I did enjoy when I started it, but it is kind of long and Iâm intimidated đ thank you so much in advance!!!
(Also, I know itâs not books related but as an aside, if you have any fave French teen-audience tv shows or movies, Iâd love recs for that too)

The book is a collection of stories, all by the same author so Iâve broken down the individual story ratings below.
Little Rituals - 2.75/5, good setup and initial spookiness but it flinches right at the end so doesnât commit one way or the other
The Decline and Ascent - 3.25/5, the broad strokes are clear enough to guess and the message is a good one. It just doesnât flow well
Casa Perdida - 4/5, nice and spooky and the disjointed journal fragments works really well for the style of story
Polaris Breach - 3/5, overall just fine? I liked the choice in protagonist being a double mastectomy breast cancer survivor but the rest didnât grab me as much as it moved too quickly
The Escape Room - 3/5, short and to the point. I didnât spot the page count for this chapter so I was expecting it to build so the ending caught me by surprise
The Burning Fields - 2.5/5, haunting but predictable given the daftness of the MMCâs actions
Truth or Consequences - 3.75, this one has been the most interesting story so far but it jumps POV too much and too often for it to flow well
Dungeon Crawler - 3/5, love a bit of video game horror, wouldâve liked the horror to be down the other routes as well as more of a buildup rather than just at the end
The Voices - 3.75/5, great buildup, liked the formatting and the building dread given by the extra information between the voicemails
Costa Valiente - 2.75/5, very quick so I was waiting for a twist but then it ended
Finders Keepers - 3/5, longer build up but the spookiness was over quickly
Small Portions - 3.5/5, Iâm curious about the backstory we donât get to see but I liked the flow of this one
The Lighted Frame - 3/5, spooky but the writing voice is almost removed from the story
Schrödinger Cake - 2.5/5, not quite sure what to make of this one, there isnât quite enough one way or the other
Listening Post Omega - 3/5, Iâm left slightly confused by the ending but I liked the sci-fi setting
Thank you to the author and booksirens for the arc
