transmasc (YA)

any genre; main and (important) side characters I also have lists for transmasc (middle grade) and transmasc (adult). For graphic novels I have a separate list: transmasc (graphic novels).

Yay thank you!! 🤗🤗

Oh Matteo Cerilli’s newest book Bad in the Blood seems to have both a trans masc and trans femme MCs (siblings) but since the magic system and gender system is not 1:1 with our knowledge, I cannot say for certain!! I only assume, but give that one a read (murder mystery/who-did-it???/thriller/noir mystery esc from and alternate 1920s America)

2

Oh thank you for this! 🙌 I thought I had added it when I bought it but I seem to have missed adding it here 🙈 It's on the list now 🫡

2

I’m reading it right now and it’s SOOO good! I only assume Gristle is trans masc (but I hate assuming) but the way the magic and world building works, it seems to point that way. I really recommend it if you like the genre

2

Aahh how can I arrange my TBR plan so I can get to this soon 😭 I'm anyway inclined to give ample leeway for characters who don't or can't say they identify in this specific way because the setting of the book doesn't allow (well) for the precise word to be used and/or exist 🙌

2

Sometimes you just gotta push something directly to the top and not feel bad about it 🤭

2

Problem is, I keep doing that, so at this point I'm just shuffling my books 😭🤣

2

Oh BIG same

GIMME GIMME GIMME 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

3

I probably have some recs as well. I'll get back to you :)

At this point I have to comment this: every single time, without fail, when I come here and scroll through the comments, my brain starts singing the ABBA song 🤣🤣

2

Other books you could add:

  • The DeadEndia series by Hamish Steele (they are graphic novels tho, so idk if you're adding those here or not)
  • The [Un]popular Vote by Jasper Sanchez (lowkey skimmed this lol)
  • The Passing Playbook by Isaac Fitzsimons (listen to this via audiobook, absolutely fantastic 🙂‍↕️)
  • Between Perfect and Real by Ray Stoeve (wasn't a favorite but there were some memorable moments)
  • I am J by Cris Beam (honestly, I don't really remember much about this one but the MC is trans masc lmao 😂)
  • Ash's Cabin by Jen Wang (also a graphic novel, not something I would typically gravitate towards but it was still pretty good)
  • I Shall Never Fall in Love by Hari Conner (another graphic novel, got this as an ARC but it's since been released, I'm not a big fan of historical fiction but it was still decent)
  • The Magical Boy series by The Kao (graphic novels, the premise is decently unique but it was kind of forgettable otherwise imo)
  • Felix Ever After by Kacen Callendar (I didn't find the characters particularly likeable but it wasn't bad)
  • Constellations by Kate Glasheen (another graphic novel, I really liked the one analogy the guidance counselor used about gender, it does talk about addiction so be mindful of that)
  • Homebody by Theo Parish (graphic novel memoir, it was pretty enjoyable)

I think those are all the ones I've read that aren't on the list lol 🤣👀

Thank you for taking the time to make such a big list of suggestions!! ❤️🥹 The (Un)Popular Vote, The Passing Playbook, Between Perfect and Real, and Felix Ever After were already on the list, I think the second half might not have loaded for you or something? 😟 I'm still super on the fence about graphic novels: I don't know if I should put them in my 3 age group lists (MG, YA, adult) depending on where they fit, should I make a list just for graphic novels (for all age groups? or 3 separate ones), and what about nonfiction like memoirs and guides? 🤯 if you have any suggestions how to go about this, I'd appreciate them a lot! 🥹 incidentally, most of the graphic novels you mentioned I have also read or are on my TBR 🙌 For I am J I think I might only add it if I ever get to reading it and can verify myself that the depiction is okay, since it's from 2011 and the author seems to be a cis woman (can anyone confirm this?) 🙈

Yeah, ig the second half isn't loading for me then 😭 I'll see if I can refresh. Hmmm, that's tough. I feel like having 3 separate graphic novel lists sounds like a lot. Personally, I think intermixing them might be better? Because I'd rather have the problem of checking to see if something is a graphic novel or not than having to check the age range. I know most Pagebounders are over 18 so it probably doesn't matter much, but that's my thinking. Yeah, I think that's right 💀 I wasn't as diligent at checking whether the trans books I was reading were written by trans authors 3 years ago (which is when I read it) mostly because I felt starved of any kind of representation. 😭 I'm pretty sure I remember the afterword talking about her experience with helping transgender kids, which is something, but I totally get if you'd rather stay away from the book/see how you feel after reading it before potentially adding it to the list. :)

2

I can see the books you mentioned and I'm just a silly goose who forgot to check what was already on the list 🤦‍♂️😂

2

No worries 🙌 you can see it as proof that your suggestions were super on point for the list! 😌🤗

2

Yeah, 3 additional lists would be quite the upkeep, and I'm not sure I'd have 5 graphic novels for each age group to even be able to start all 3 lists. The perfectionist in me would also want to sort nonfiction graphic novels differently based on age group, but that would make it 6 lists... 🤔 And yeah, for me it's the same actually, checking the age range is a bit of a chore – which has also made me gravitate to wanting to make just one graphic novel list, so I wouldn't have to check 😅 I mean it's not like I don't also have books by authors that aren't trans on my list, and books by trans authors aren't 100% guaranteed to provide accurate representation (just much more likely to do so). For this one it just might be the combination of it being older and the author (as well as a brief check of the plot not inspiring the most confidence). But if I do get to reading it (the trouble of a huge TBR 😅) and it holds up, I'll add it to the list!

2

Oh boy, yeah that would be a lot of lists 🫣😅 LMAO Fair tho 😂 That's true and makes me feel a lot better 🙂‍↕️ I'll be interested to hear your thoughts once you do! I read it too long ago to remember much lol

2

So. Many. Lists. 😂 Glad you understand 🙂‍↕️😁 Gotta warn you though, that's likely years away, if ever at all 🥲🥲

2

🫡 I get it, my TBR is over 1,000 books lmao so I have no clue when I'll get to most of them 😂🫣

2

Same though 😭😭 I actually have the answer to this, it's "at some point in the future" 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

2

Omg, this is gold!! 🪙 Thanks for sharing! ☺️

2

Aww 🥹 I'm so happy you like it 🤗
