in yuri manga/anime, the “crimson rose and candy girl” archetype historically features romance between a confident, alluring “crimson rose” (often with high-contrast, dramatic features and aesthetics) and a more feminine, spirited, earnest “candy girl” (often with low-contrast, airy features and aesthetics). while these stories originated as queer coming-of-age tragedies, i love identifying a similar framework in my favourite lesbian/sapphic novels alongside its various subversions!
