I'm really enjoying the book generally, but I especially love the magic system! In so many books when there's magic, it's more or less "magic is real and it works like this". I love how here it's more complex. Just like every other aspect of humanity and culture, different people of from different backgrounds may have magic/witchcraft in common, but they have their own practices and approaches to it, even if there are similar threads running through each one. It makes it feel much closer to our own world, it's great!

"Aggie, love, talk to me." What's so hard about calling a woman by her full name? Why do men always want to give you some smaller, sweeter name than the one your mama gave you?
This spoke to my soul. I feel like the feminine rage is going to be strong in this book and I'm all for it 🔥.

The idea behind the book is quite unique, the dark humour is spot-on and I enjoyed the use of modern language. Apart from that, it just felt very flat. The plot goes off on a tangent a few times instead of focusing on the play and the Athenian slaves, which is what I found most interesting. It also doesn’t help that the main character Lampo comes across as having the emotional intelligence of a child. His casual dehumanization of some people, paired with his random attachment to others, felt rather fickle and creepy, and it was just not a very enjoyable point of view to follow.
Special mention to the Spanish translation, which was fantastic 👏. After I started reading it, I was made aware that the main characters speak in modern Irish vernacular, which only adds to the creativity of this book, but I was already enjoying the translated version too much to switch.

"Gelon looks at me. He's handsome, with eyes the colour of shallow sea when the sun shines through it. Not shit brown like mine."
Ah, yes. The average feeling towards one's own brown eyes... 💩👀 I can relate.
