  • Welcome to the mythical world !

Hello everyone. Thank you all so much for joining the Mythological World Tour. I will be your tour guide from here on. This is my first quest and I have poured my heart into this topic which is so close to me, and I hope you all will tag along in this journey.

I believe all our cultures are secretly fuelled by our myths and lores , and it is the OGs of the OGs, when it comes to fantasy. World mythology walked so the fantasy genre could run ! These are what we got handed down from our grandparents and parents as bedtime stories.

Onto the Quest itself I have tried to cover as much ground by geography as I could in our first round of books. My goal is to explore lesser known or less explored myths and folklore with this community through this quest. There were so many good picks it was hard to pick only a few .

The current list features 40 books Roughly included are : China, Japan. S. korea, India, Russia , Ireland, Greece, Greater Africa, Egypt, Indigenous, Latin America This list is not exhaustive at all. More regions will be featured as we go, along with more from the above.

When it comes to fantasy a lot of thematic exploration also draws from world history , takes liberties with it and intertwines with myths and lore. The list will mimic the same. I shall continue to make this culture map as diverse as I can. I have tried to include as many lesser known, unique books as I could , aiming for a good balance, so we can all participate together.

    P. S: Please make this space your own. Make the forum interactive, leave us suggestions and recommendations and everything else in between. I am excited to hear all your thoughts 😍

    YOURS, ELF

I have no idea what’s happening but apparently that’s to be expected! Getting Adam, Garden of Eden vibes. Either that or Piranesi is part of a social experiment 😅

I'm glad I read A Song of Achilles before this. I feel like it was a smooth transition, even with my previous knowledge of these myths.

    Oh. My.

I LOVED this retelling. I cried. It's been months since I've read it and I still think about it. It is such a beautiful telling. Ugh. And the freaking ending, y'all.

    Has anyone watched the show?

After reading the book I decided to watch the show and it's excellent so far! I'm in episode 3 and it feels very book accurate. Did anyone else watch it? Did you like it?

If you loved A Thousand Ships, you won't be disappointed by this book. It features multiple POV, which expand Medusa's story and gives us a lot of context. Medusa not being the main character was a surprise, and I guess my only wish is we had gotten a little bit more time with her. However, she is the core of the story, so her presence is always felt throughout the book. Through the sharp humour in the portrayal of gods (who, in true Greek mythology fashion, feel more imperfect and whimsical as humans) and heroes, and the tragedy that befalls Medusa, Natalie Haynes gives us another perspective on a well-known story about a hero and a monster, only she tells it as a tale of a monstrous "hero" and their victims.
