I definitely thought I would be rating this higher. I was completely immersed from the first 100 pages. Unfortunately, as I progressed my reading experience became less and less enjoyable. Philip is an annoying protagonist but I can overlook that. I just feel that nothing at all happened. Du Maurier sets the scene spectacularly at the start of the novel but unlike with Rebecca, where a sense of foreboding prevailed that kept me at the edge of my seat this book became boring quite often. Because I didn't feel the tension that a lot of people remark on, I disliked the ambiguity of the ending. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the 1/3 of this book but at the end I was left disappointed. I needed more.

The mentions of gender stereotypes are getting a bit tiresome. I don't remember a similar theme being this pronounced in Rebecca. I'm hoping it serves some purpose to the story. Only time will tell. I just have to keep reminding myself this was written in 1951.

I like my castles cold, my moors windswept, and my heroines swooning.

This book has me hooked! The writing is so atmospheric and I'm loving the pace so far. It definitely won me over faster than Rebecca and I'm hoping it will stick the landing because it could end up an all-time fav.

I had high hopes for this so I might be judging it too harshly. Unfortunately, I can't rate it any higher. I know Anne Rice wrote this to cope with the death of her daughter. Grief and the meaning of life are strong themes in the book. Ultimately, though I am left disappointed. We follow Louis' entire life and he is plagued with existential questions for most of it. The arc of his character is very anticlimactic. What's the point of this book? Without delving into spoilers, should my takeaway be that the will and passion for life will be lost no matter what? I even grew tired of the writing, which I initially enjoyed but as I kept reading the melodramatic prose started to bore me.

I'm enjoying the writing but something is keeping me from being fully immersed. It might be too early to tell but overall I think it will disappoint me. Definitely different from what I anticipated. I will give it an honest try and I do find the narration entertaining if not a bit monotone.
