When I think of this book, I think of the best strawberry shortcake I've ever had. Rich in flavor, with a light frosting to pair perfectly with the sweetness of the berry. When I go for another bite, it's not a chore; it's barely even a conscious decision. Something in my brain awakened the moment it all but melted in my mouth, and I knew this was a meal to be savored in my memory only.
Vibrant, complex characters painted within a difficult, unforgiving world, their struggles conquered through their friendships and the talents they fought to cultivate. Brief segments of prose paired with break-neck pacing of a plot which forces our main character to do a great deal of self-reflection.
Adventure fantasy is not my favorite subgenre, just as strawberry shortcake is by no means my favorite dessert. But that does not change the fact that I adored that strawberry shortcake, or that The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is the best adventure fantasy novel I've read.
