This book is an amazing epic sapphic fantasy filled with grief, love, revenge, justice and hope. I loved the characters and their complexities, the exploration of trauma due to war and oppression is really well done and palpable through the layers of the characters personalities. The back and forth in the timeline and POVs was a bit difficult to follow at first but I found it very interesting and after a particular plot point it became easier and very enjoyable ! I would have like a bit more time with Cai-Li and Anne in the castle but their relationship is already well fleshed out and poignant. The secondary characters were also very interesting and lovable, particularly Ark Li ! I would have like a bit more world building but I still got pulled in the story by the characters and their hardships all the same. The story deals with the heavy subjects of colonisation, war and oppression and the aftermath of it, the devastation and how to overcome it, and it does it in a way that feels very true and clever. Stories like this are important. It’s a powerful and bittersweet book that I can only encourage you to read ! If you’re a fan of The Unbroken and The Poppy War you should go and get that book right now, you’re gonna love it ! Thanks a lot to the author Dawn Chen for providing me an e-ARC in exchange of an honest review ☺️ I’m really happy to have discovered this story and I’m definitely going to check Dawn Chen’s future work 😌
