Oh my God, Ali Hazelwood, girl. I love this woman’s writing so much, like the fact that she can write this little novella and I eat it up it’s just insane. That was so much fun. It was so hot. It was everything I enjoyed, obviously.

  • The Book vs The Author

Hello! I was wondering when you read a book and you are aware of the authors life or actions whether that be good or bad), do you find that it influences your interpretation/how you take in the book or do you believe that what is written is independent of the author? I was going through an essay called, “The Death of the Author,” for personal research and was wondering if people in the generally public read beyond whats just given to them on the page! Thanks ^o^

The story is so festive with the October fall vibes. I really enjoyed that cozy feel. I love our main characters. I thought they were very endearing. I do think they fall in love pretty quickly, but it actually didn’t bother me. I usually have a hard time with Insta love stories, but this one wasn’t too unbelievable for me. I like that they were there for each other. It was a very supportive and healthy relationship. Even when they were just friends, you saw that deep love, and then when they got into a relationship, it was just tenfold. I also loved the tension, and the spice was enjoyable.  I was a little nervous with the Groundhog Day aspect, but actually it wasn’t very repetitive at all. We don’t really see the same day over and over again; we actually just see her redo the month once, which I thought was done great. I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a fall October themed book. I think you’d really enjoy this one. Like, I mean, our love interest is literally a magician and a witch, and it’s taking place in a fall Halloween town atmosphere.

  • Wintery Suggestions ❄☃

Does anyone have any good recommendations with a winter setting? Trying to make my plan for the next couple months and I like to align the seasons when possible; it has a certain comfort/coziness for me when the book matches the outside lol.

I read mostly mysteries, thrillers, classics, lit fic, but I will gladly dabble in other genres. Thanks in advance â˜șïžđŸ™

  • diversity in books

i love how much more diverse books have become lately—there are so many amazing stories from different backgrounds, and it’s awesome to see. but something i’ve noticed is that jewish voices are still kind of missing from that mix. sure, there are some books with jewish characters or about jewish history, but it often feels like they’re either holocaust stories or the same old stereotypes.

it’s weird, because there are so many different kinds of jewish experiences out there–secular, religious, cultural, mixed, jewish people of color—and we rarely see that reflected in modern books. i just wish jewish stories were part of the diversity conversation too. real diversity should include everyone.

  • BIPOC recs for October

Any recommendations for BIPOC authors for the spooky fall season? So books that have vampires, werewolves, witches, or ghosts, or books that are simply spooky horror or have Halloween as a setting.

I don’t know how to feel about this book. I have mixed feelings. I don’t think it was necessarily bad. I just think it was lacking a few things. I think the progression of Teal and Carter’s relationship felt very instant and just very physical instead of emotional. I think if there were POV chapters from their past or just more buildup of them becoming friends again, it would’ve been more believable and heartfelt that way, so it ended up being hard to really believe in the relationship. Also, I’m not sure. I liked Carter as the MMC. I don’t know that whole thing with his abuela. I understand the trauma he also has endured, but for me it would’ve ended right then and there. Like, that woman fully called her a dog right in front of his face, which is crazy work, and then for him not to say a single thing and stand up for her in that moment was even crazier. Also that whole commentary that she had on how his family treats him and the men in the family like their shining stars Yeah, no, from then on the fantasy was broken, lol. It was getting too real, and not in a good way. Like, he did end up apologizing, but it truly just wasn’t enough for me. As for Teal’s character, she felt a bit repetitive. Every time we were in her head, it was the same thoughts over and over. I did love the family aspect, the sisters having powers, and the cultural elements in the book. I think it’s worth a try; maybe these issues just bothered me personally. Overall, it’s a fun, witchy read, and the personalities of the women really carry the story, not so much the romance.

I cannot begin to express how close I hold this book to my heart and how important of a read this is. I’m so happy and thankful I was able to pick this up. I so wish I could’ve had this book back in elementary school and throughout middle school and high school, and even now I love how many talking points she covers and how much heart this woman has for us. BIWOC, this is about to be the most reread book I have on my shelves, along with a few other special ones. I can’t wait to reread and annotate this. I highly encourage everyone to read this book, especially if you claim to be an ally in any way. It also would be such a disservice to yourself if you are a BIWOC and don’t pick it up. This is such an empowering and heartfelt love letter to brown girls, exactly what the title says. I wish I knew how to express how much I love this book; there’s nothing I could say that would even cover how deeply amazing it is.

I enjoy this read. I was a little hesitant; most of the stories I’ve read that have been inspired by Gilmore Girls usually fall flat for me, but I thought this one was really cute. I’ve come to realize I love the single dad trope. My God, I love Cliff so much. Like, that man was truly written by a woman. He was literally everything. He's so heartwarming and charming. I also love all the characters and the little town; it was cozy. I think the only thing that was kind of lacking for me was Michelle. I wish she had more depth, like I had felt from Cliff. I don’t know what it was; I think what it was is that I’ve read very similar character types like her. One character that she reminded me of was Nora from Book Lovers, so I just wish she had a little bit more added to her that would set her apart from similar character types. I did like her. And she didn’t feel one dimensional, but I just wish we got a bit more, but overall I love the dynamic between Cliff and Michell and the kids. This book was a really fun time. I love that it took place in the 90s. It was fun to imagine and watch it like a little 90s romcom. It’s an enjoyable read for the fall.
