Such a great piece of historical fiction. I’d love to learn what’s based in truth and where the author took creative liberties.

I thought this was a lovely read. I’ve been living in Australia for three years and loved how this touched on racism and treatment of Indigenous people. It took me longer than I thought to get through - some bits of the dialogue dragged on, I felt. But I loved the plot and the characters.

I’m so surprised by all the three star reviews for this book - I thought this was a perfect read. I didn’t want to put it down, I was even reading on my lunch break. This book follows the life of István, a Hungarian man. We first meet him as a teenager, then a young adult, and eventually he finds himself living among the ultra-wealthy in London. Each chapter jumps to a new point in his life, and you put together what happened in between. It’s very dialogue heavy, but at the same time, very little is said at all. I found it incredibly compelling and beautifully written.

This isn’t my usual flavour of book - but I really enjoyed it! I wanted to read this before watching the new TV show - and I was hooked from page one. Such great storytelling and plot twists.

I adored this book, I read it across several long flights and couldn’t put it down. A gritty story about growing up in Thatcher-era Scotland. Deals with poverty, addiction, sexuality and more. It’s heartbreaking and raw - but also beautiful. One of my favourite books this year.

This was the best book I’ve read in a long time - it broke my heart over and over again. What a beautiful read about how one teenager’s mistake impacts her family across generations. I love historical fiction and multigenerational sagas so this was my ideal kind of story. I spent the whole day reading as I couldn’t bear to put the book down.

So far this is… fine? The prose is so simplified and in present tense; it kind of makes everything feel less real to me? Also Joan feels like a caricature of a goody two shoes stereotype, not a full character. I do really like the setting so far, I can tell TJR did so so much research.
