Hoewel het boek begint met een disclaimer dat Je moeder een werk van fictie is, bekruipt me toch het gevoel dat dit verhaal alleen geschreven kan worden door iemand die - op z’n minst - van dichtbij heeft ervaren hoe het is om moederloos te zijn, terwijl je moeder nog leeft.

Een indringend portret van Rosalie, die opgroeit met een afwezige moeder, die op een dag vertrekt en niet meer naar haar, haar tweelingzus en twee jongere broertjes omkijkt. Rosalie groeit op, gaat studeren, maakt vrienden, wordt verliefd, krijgt een droombaan en ogenschijnlijk gaat het goed met haar - behalve dat ze blijft worstelen met gevoelens van overweldigende eerzaamheid.

Er gebeuren geen grote dingen, maar het verhaal voelt toch groots, omdat je diep van binnen - net als Rosalie - beseft dat haar zoektocht niet zal leiden tot een bevredigend antwoord.

We Should All Be Feminists has been on my tbr for ages and I’m happy I’ve finally listened to it. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a gifted storyteller and I love how she put her thoughts into words with vivid and relatable examples to show the audience what it means to be (called) a feminist.

First presented as a TedTalk in 2012, I wonder how much (or little) progress we’ve made since - it’s actually maddening if you think about it. But as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said: we should all be angry. Anger has a long history of bringing about positive change.

Ladies and gentlemen, theys and thems, put your hands together, and make it clap for this masterpiece. Oh my heart. Where do I even begin? The story? Powerful. Writing? Sorcery level gorgeous. Prose? Imaginative, thought provoking, and so breathtakingly beautiful, it hurt in the best way.

Minbak tells the story of Youngja, Hana, and Ada, three generations of women and the pivotal moments in their lives that shaped them. It’s a story about trauma, resilience, and compassion. It’s critical, but nuanced. Lyrical, yet meticulous. It’s so, SO good, I want to buy ten thousand copies so that I could build a fort, immerse myself in it and ugly cry until Ela Lee decides to publish her next project.
