  • Fiction Book Recs with Chronically Ill/Disabled Main Characters

    Hey there!

I am looking for fiction book recommendations that have chronically ill/disabled main characters. I myself have multiple chronic illnesses and am disabled and would love stories where the main characters overcome their circumstances despite their limitations. My favorite genres are fantasy, sci-fi and anything with a found family trope. Thanks in advance!

  • Magical book wish

If you could wave a magical wand right now and get any unpublished book into your hands right this second what would it be? This could be a planned but as-of-yet unpublished book or one that you wish an author might write! This is obviously not intended to pressure any authors since it is a magical hypothetical.

I'd like Naomi Novik to write an epic fantasy similar to Spinning Silver but loosely based on soviet Russia and centring feminist actors. (if I had a creative writing bone in my body that's the book I would write)

  • Authors you couldn't bear losing to bad behaviour

Who are the authors for whom news that they became/were problematic would be the most devastating to you? For me it would probably be Maggie O'Farrell and R.F. Kuang. I just couldn't take it, their backlist is too important for me and everything they release are insta-reads.

Edit: just to be clear this has nothing to do with my personal views on author cancellation. It's three sentences. I have nuanced takes, but just wanted to generate some fun readerly chat about favourite authors.

This was a very good and addictive read, and very emotional 🥺😭

Book: 4.5 ⭐ 🎧 Audiobook: 5 ⭐, very well read and very emotional

    Themes:

    • Yes this had an emotional romance, queer love and was about the first few female astronauts, but at heart I think it was also a story about women, and all the different kinds of love and relationships they can have - friendship, romantic, familial etc.
    • Quite a lot of the book explored familial issues and motherly love.
    • It also explored female friendship and solidarity when it comes to addressing the patriarchy, and how different women tackle that.

    Critique and Characters:

    • I gave it 4.5 stars and not 5, mainly because I would have liked one of the main characters, Vanessa, to get a little more exploration/development and maybe some of the other astronauts too. A lot of time was spent on the relationship between the main character, Joan, and her sister and niece. While I thought this was well done, I would have liked some more time exploring the other astronaut characters too. I wouldn't have minded it was a little longer to do that.
    • Despite that, I thought the main character Joan was amazing. I loved her character and complexity and growth and she felt very real, as well as just an amazing person.
