I am always a sucker for a book that builds atmosphere as well as this one. While reading I could feel the cold castles, foggy woods, warmth of the gatherings, etc. Overall, I very much enjoyed the story. It was relatively easy to follow (although a guide of all the cards would be nice to have to reference) with just the right amount of twists and turns. I do feel like a lot of the plot points were predictable and much of the foreshadowing was clearly spelled out, but depending on your reading mood this could be a good or bad thing. Personally, I’m coming out of a reading slump so I didn’t mind it! I’m hoping that the second book expands a little bit more on the history and magic system as well as some of the characters.

Previously read, but I’m now going through all the audio books! Finished AFTG in 2025 and am just updating for my reading goal. (These characters have had a grip on me the last 5 years)

Ok coming from someone who read The Knight and the Moth before this, Rachel Gillig has a commonality between her books but im not complaining. I happen to very much like it.
