This book made me feel heartache, rage, horror, sadness, and happiness. Most of those emotions are from Nova's journey to healing and the awful experience of her not knowing what was done to her. I also thought I had guessed the villain. Wow I got that so wrong. Nova and Kol's journey to love though was beautiful and I think it accurately portrayed how the people who love us can give us the strength to fight and heal. The theme I resonated with the most was that healing is not a linear journey. Some days we have good progress and other days it feels like two steps back. Nova went through that several times, which made her character more realistic. Nova's ability to open herself up to the chance of love after being hurt so badly really showed her character growth. Her choice to trust someone again was so powerful. Also her realization that Brae had also suffered and they were both different people showed me that she recognized for the first time the impact her disappearance had on other people. Kol's evolution complimented Nova's because he also was scared to open back up affer what Sky's mom did to him. And so both of them were able to find shared pain within each other. This book was written for people who have suffered from violence. Nova's character is a beacon of hope that no matter what you go through you can heal, you can find a family and people who understand you, and that someone will always love you. A takeaway I have from this book is that therapy is good for everyone. And if not therapy, to find someone I can talk to who will listen and not judge or try to fix things.
