I understand that the whole point is to explore the classic unreliable narrator trope and how we all fall into the roles we play in life. But does she have to be so unlikeable?? I’m not sure I care for this style of off-kilter writing, just left my brain mush and disconcerted.

    Good prose? ✅ Precision? ✅ Disjointing? ✅ Jarring?✅ Personal Enjoyment? ❌😵☠️

As someone who thoroughly adored One Day, this book read like a warm weighted blanket (despite the miserable and bleak weather of the English countryside). I might have a soft spot for books and movies about love that grows from the mundane but I just find it soothing. I can see how the author’s screenwriting skills seeped into the novel because the characters’ development and the plot are very much driven by the dialogue. I can easily see these lines in a Four Weddings and a Funeral/When Harry Met Sally type rom-com drama film. Only took off a half ⭐️ because we all knew where the story would go — but the predictable plot didn’t make it any less enjoyable.

“In the years of the great seclusion, she’d found herself wishing for the darkness so that she could justify going to bed. Now she wanted to prolong the days, wish them brighter and to occupy them fully. It would be a mistake to name it, but what was this sensation of optimism and receptiveness?”

A perfect description of what it feels like to finally FINALLY crawl out of a slump. Anyone who has gone through a break up or some sort of down time can relate to this. This feeling of dawn breaking over, of finally waking up to a bright sunny day after a long winter, of fuzziness dissipating and the world coming back in full color and force. What a great quote.

“Private, intimate, a book was something she could pull around and over herself, like a quilt.”

Reading this while watching snow fall outside my window might be the coziest I’ve felt all winter.
