This novel is built on an intriguing plot and premise of time travel and love. The writing is strong but the pace was a bit slow at times. I feel like there were sections of the book that didn't add much value aside from maybe getting to know a character's personality a little better. I feel like the premise was pretty well executed, and I appreciate a good genre-blending novel, but for my taste it was a little too romance-y and not enough sci-fi.

Dept. of Speculation takes you inside the mind of a woman who is living a life with a head full of thoughts, some deep, some random, and you get to hear them all. Reading Offill's writing of this unnamed protagonist is like skipping a rock across a stream of consciousness. At times, I was confused as to how we arrived from one thought to the next, but I was never truly lost. In many ways, Offill writes internal thoughts the way we think in real life. In fragments. This book is about relationships, parenthood, family, monotony, and coming to grips with the pitfalls of marriage. A short and quick read that I can't quite explain why I recommend everyone to read it.
