I have all sorts of feelings about this book. Mainly the friction with it being I did not enjoy the MC at all. I found her annoying, found her growth unrealistic, and found the absence of her engagement with the world around her as it actually was irritating. To me, from end to end, she came off as antisocial, unmoored, and frustrating. But the WORLD and every other character were so beautiful. I wanted to spend time in this magical little corner of paradise for as long as possible. The world was so rich and bright with so much life and lore, I was so intrigued by the relationship between the city and the outer islands, the flora and fauna varietals, and more. And Caz was by far the most delightful character! I really wanted to like this book more, but I could not look past the unshakeable flaws of the writing of the main character, so I have to give this 3 stars. 😔

Okay I admit this got leagues better, but man the tonal whiplash from the main character… I’m sorry I’m not believing that a girl who had shut everyone down and out due to isolated elitist living is suddenly going to become the hero and a rule breaker from 1 experience. I came from an environment like hers, that changed over time. And yes that’s tricky to show in a book but as far as my reading experience is going I feel like we swapped the MC for a completely different character (not that I mind!!)
