This was my second time reading Kingfisher (the first being Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking), and they are already becoming a favorite author of mine!
This is a retelling of an Edgar Allen Poe story and you can tell sometimes but Kingfisher did an amazing job flushing out the story. The characters, while sometimes a bit exaggerated, were just closed off enough to really make you question everything while also still being enjoyable to read.
From the start you can guess what is happening before the characters and it does drag the story for the first quarter. The main charater Easton really carries that first section and the way Kingfisher creates that suspense and unease that Easton experiences as these horrors start to unfolded is fantastic. The more you read the more you start question how much of it you actually know.
Overall it was a fantastic short read and if you've already read the original short story this book will be a great way to reimagine it.
