This was a fantastic read, it was really immersive and I care about every single one of the crows. The way Bardugo writes these characters is impressive and you can clearly see how she improved from SaB.
The crows
The crows are an awesome group of people that have a lot of flaws and I love them for it, but they need to work on them or they're going to doom themselves to fail 🫠
I have such complicated feelings about Kaz. He's really smart and I hate what he went through, that was so traumatizing. At the same time, he's such an asshole and everyone (especially Inej and Jesper) deserves to be treated better, no matter how afraid he is those are his friends. But omg the yearning, this boy is destroying himself bit by bit, he needs so much help from his family to feel like he truly belongs with these people. (PLEASE Kaz, seek help, COMMUNICATE)
Inej's character development was so good! She's so awesome! 😍 I love that she overcomes her doubts, finds a new purpose and values herself. She's a badass and I hope we still get to see her pov in the next book because I love it when she narrates.
Nina, my beloved. I hope she survives this. She's so brave and determined and simply wonderful. Her story with Mathias is heartbreaking, but I understand why she did what she did, she just wants to protect everyone 🥺
Matthias had so much character development. Even when he doesn't realize it, he grows so much, for example he doesn't see Jesper in another light when he discovers he is a fabrikator. It was so hard to read his pov in the beginning, but his story is so interesting. I love him so much and hope that he can find a new purpose and start again. He's a gentle giant at heart ❤️
I hope we get to now Jesper more in the next book. I really liked him as a character, he has a lot of potential, but he needs to work on his gambling problem, otherwise he's going to get in even more trouble. I do feel for him because being Kaz's "second best" or whatever and what you get is not being told about plans must be hard. I think he had/has a little crush on Kaz so that complicates everything. He really needs someone to be on his corner.
Wylan, my baby 🥺 I hope we get to now him better in the next book. My poor boy deserves so much more than what he got. He's a genius, it doesn't matter that he can't read and I'm so glad that Kaz saw that. I wonder if he'll end up with Kuwei's appearance forever 🤔 (I love that he's a redhead and I'll probably imagine him that way forever.)
Their relationships
Kaz and Inej have so much potencial, they could be so good for each other. But Kaz needs to get his shit together because Inej deserves the world. "I'm going to get my girl" 🥵
I love Nina and Matthias's complicated relationship. It's full of angst, but I think they're finally on the same page and I hope the best for them, although I think they're a bit doomed.
We didn't get to see a lot of Jesper and Wylan in general, but their interactions are so sweet and fun that I can't help but think they'd make a wonderful couple.
Honorable mentions:
I love that even though Wylan isn't officially part of the crows Kaz still listens to him and believes he's more than what his father says.
I love the moments we got of Nina and Inej just being silly and talking about their crushes, they are the best.
Inej and Jesper feel like siblings, they have so many nice moments together.
Plotwise I didn't mind that the beginning was a bit slower (although Matthias and Jesper's pov were a bit harder to read for me in the beginning) and we didn't get to the heist part earlier because it was a great opportunity to get to know the crows. I did mind that I could see Van Eck's betrayal coming, but somehow Kaz "Dirtyhands" Brekker couldn't.
I must admit that although I read the original version of the book were it's mentioned constantly that the characters are between 15-17 I imagined them as at least 22-24 and I think the jokes work all the same because I joke like that with my friends and I'm in that age range.
