Yo what the HELL was that 😭 first off, what a mistake not to read this right after finishing Ninth House - we get no foreplay just straight to the meat of the action, I had to watch multiple YouTube recaps to reorient myself. NORMALIZE CONTEXT ‼️ I kept waiting to care and I just… didn’t? So much happened and none of the magic is explained until the second a plot point needs to happen (one of the most egregious examples at the end: the demon held the hell gate open with Alex’s blood? They just.. assume this? What?) The completionist in me will probably finish off the series but damn, I was saving book 2 for a rainy day and feel so let down. Hoping this is just second book syndrome at its finest

This scene with Ruth babysitting her nephew was weird... like she was mean to the kid and made him a gross sandwich and then was surprised when he threw a tantrum and was upset??? I mean, I don't have much kid experience, but his interactions with Tina were weird, and Ruth is an odd one too. The last line says 'Tina left without me'.... but Tina wasn't there to get Ruth or take her anywhere??

This one, I feel, is definitely for the girls. If you have been swept up in the wave of true crime sensationalism and have begun to wonder why we never look at the victims themselves, this is probably a book for you. Knoll captures the enraging battle women had/have to fight just to be viewed as humans deserving of justice. I think she did a phenomenal job of portraying all of the ways in which the system failed these women. I couldn’t help but cry with the characters who, despite it all, “brought goodies” to trial, and even after years still cared so deeply for one another that they put themselves in harms way yet again just to help their friends find answers. Although this book was technically fiction, I think it was such a wise choice to so closely follow a real-life event and what many of these women likely had to face at that time. I think that this has easily been my favorite book of 2024!

Feeling like the plot is getting slightly lost as we dive into these complex relationships 😩 hoping it gets back on track! (PS: Someone else PLS read this book🙃😂)

As someone who attended crime con and religiously listened to true crime pods, I’m so pleased to say I didn’t piece together who this novel was loosely following which gives me so much joy because it means that Knoll completely accomplished what she’d hoped with this book. I find myself savoring the rage and all the complex inner thoughts of our protagonists because … WOMEN! I also feel so thankful that Knoll was able to conceptualize this because as someone who consistently consumed true crime I found myself wondering why I wanted to hear about someone else's real-life tragedies, and therefor took a break. But this novel totally fills the missing piece of the puzzle for me. She de-sensationalizes the perpetrators and instead pays homage to those whose lives were so brutally taken. GAH I have so much to say about this. Love love love and not even close to finished yet. I hope that true crime story-telling as a whole begins to lean this way.

I feel like this book is so unlike any other “murder mystery”/“thriller” I have ever read!!! Loving it so far
