Post from the The Citadel of Ice: A Novella of The Valley forum
Fascinated by how a novella that’s 4 chapters long can feel like it’s dragging… two full chapters spent literally just GETTING to the citadel, which is leaving not much room for the actual horror elements. I genuinely think this novella needs at LEAST two more chapters so the time in the citadel gets the attention it desperately needs…
On another note, from a writer’s perspective, I DO like the prospect of a 4-chapter novella. Short and sweet, if it’s executed well (I can’t say this one’s the best example of that, but still). Most novellas I’ve read have been 8-10ish chapters, give or take. something this short is kinda nice, because you don’t have to commit that much Reading Energy to it.

Really not thrilled that Adèle is a cop. I think Claude/Claire is an interesting character and there’s a lot of lore on that side of the story that’s interesting to me, but every time I get to an Adèle chapter I just sigh. I don’t like her one bit. There’s something about the concept of a LGBTQ Cop-centric story that just feels like a smack to the face. If the author is trying to create a world where cops aren’t defenders of the status quo and willing to do more harm than good, I get it—but even things in a fantasy setting will inform people’s perception of IRL issues, and any protagonist that’s a cop immediately sends the message “cops are heroes!” when irl cops are murdering people. ACAB.

WOOOOW. What a wild ride of a book. I knew this was gonna be some really great wacky trans horror, because Andrew Joseph White excels at that kind of thing, and this book did NOT disappoint. This was the kind of book that was so utterly visceral in a way that kept me turning the page. I’m a trans man. The amount of secondhand dysphoria this book gave me, woweeee. And that sounds like it should be a detractor, but it’s not, because AJW knows how to write the trans experience in such an exceptional and real way that even though Crane was going through things I will never in my life experience (cults, pregnancy, all that blood and gore and trauma) I could still see so perfectly into his perspective.
And his note about his own experience as a trans man in his acknowledgments made me tear up a bit. AJW, I get it. I get it, so much. White is out here writing stories that amplify the voices of transmasc folks. Thank you. You signed my copy of Hell Followed With Us at a pride event a few years ago, and I hope I can meet you again someday so you can sign this book, too. You’ve quickly climbed the ranks and have solidified yourself as a favorite author.
Fantastic book. Wild book. Wacky, visceral, disturbing book. I’m very emotional about it. 10/10.
