What even is dark romance??

Hey guys!! So I really want to try dark romance and I picked Haunting Adeline series and Jesus Christ what the hell, Ive never been more scared of a book, and mind you I read "It ends with us" too and i survived it somehow

It was later then I found out that although this series is called dark romance, many people that read dark romance dont consider it a part of the genre

So my main question is what are some dark romance books that dont have SA in them and that are actually good to read?

While I barely moved forward with reading after a few chapters, I wanted to share exactly why I DNFed the book:

I felt very detached from the characters The whole point of fantasy books is that you're reading about strangers in a strange world dealing with affairs that are technically none of your business. But you stay. Why? Because you feel connected to characters, regardless of how different or similar you are to them. That connection was deeply missing here, making the reading experience very blank.
No buildup When an author is hiding a truth from you or reveals something that was an absolute truth, like a character being dead not actually being dead, it needs to leave an impact. And for it to leave an impact, it must feel like you shattered something in the reader when you revealed it. But most of the reveals here feel completely bland.
The author dances around things too much If you're going to buildup to a reveal, make the reveal impactful and worth the stay. The author jumps from one buildup to another without concluding the current one and it left me feeling dissapointed tbh

I do like the story at its core as its unique and has potential, but tbh the execution failed it in my opinion.

i really like this book but some of the dialogue is so unnatural it actually makes me cringe like maybe its because the author is (respectfully) older and this book was written a few years ago but just wanted to point that out

AMAZE AMAZE AMAZE. OH MY GOSH!!!, I dont have an expansive enough vocabulary for how much I enjoyed this book. I watched the movie first and kept seeing edits and deep dives all over tic tok I just HAD to read it. I loved how detailed yet digestible the scientific aspects were. I LOVE, love, loved this book so much it got me out of my reading slump. Such an emotional roller-coaster.
