why, though, had makoto had to take it that way? all she’d done was cook him a plate of pasta, on a whim.
very likely a combo of makoto understanding the hard work rika puts into her job (as a result not fitting under japan’s societal norms for women) and being raised by his mom only.
still, this scene stood out to me. he probably thinks himself as a feminist when in fact, he’s still misogynistic for automatically labeling rika’s cooking for him for the first time as her turning into domestic. sounds like the narrative is black and white: you are either a housewife or a feminist, there’s no grey area. it’s very refreshing to see that take and i hope the book explores this in detail as rika levels up in the kitchen

Loved Zale. I found Halla annoying but I think that was partially due to the audiobook narrator making her extra shrill. I still found her too quirky and childish. Most of the characters felt kind of one dimensional. I also found the writing to be extremely repetitive. The world is really intriguing but I don’t think I got enough from it to have a solid idea of what it’s like. That is probably partially due to the book being set in an already established world from a previous series so not knocking it for that. I want to know more about it but don’t think I can stand to read another kingfisher book for a bit. I think the style of humor, character types, and repetitive writing aren’t for me.
