My friend and I have been listening to this audio book together. this is the only way I can recommend interfacing with this book at all. pausing to make fun of Edward together is the only reason we have made it this far.

  • Iron Flame (The Empyrean, #2)
    Thoughts from 30%

I started the series in July and I flew through Fourth Wing. I've been reading fantasy since I could read so I found it quite easy to digest. However, I've just come back from a month-ish long hiatus on Iron Flame and I'm just not getting into it as much. Idk if anyone else had a bit of a reading slump during IF or if it's just me? I won't DNF it as I'm too stubborn, but it's just not capturing me as much as FW did.

The plot is moving so fast but nothing is explained? Why's it feel like hunger games with zero political commentary. Does the substance develop later on pls lmk

This was such a joy to read, stayed up late just to finish it, even if the descriptions were hard to understand up through the end of the book. Although I have soooo many questions still, I do understand why so much was left up for interpretation. One of those books where I’m sad it’s over. Excited to get into the rest of the series :)

Where has this been all my life!! It's so perfect! I need more people talking about this now!! Sunstone is about 2 women who become friends and start a bdsm relationship. There's great art and great kinks, but even better than that, the characters feel so real. There's so much humanity in this story. All the high emotions and uncertainty of a crush, a new relationship just beginning. As the characters explore their roles and desires, they never become reduced into the stereotypes of the cold, unfeeling dom, the hesitant sub being pushed into things, the emotionally damaged kinkster. They're both ostensibly normal people with some quirky sexual preferences. I've genuinely never found something that felt so close to my experience with kink before this book. The quote on the back says it all: "Sexual nerds. That's what BDSM people are, behind all the pretense"

    Enjoyment: Quality: Characters: Plot:

A story about a Muslim American teen with EDS who gets framed for a terror attack. Its a fast paced mystery thriller, featuring some crazy alt right conspiracy theorists, and the rampant Islamophobia in America. Some heavy topics, but handled in a way that's not extremely depressing. As far as EDS representation goes, this book is kinda weird. It's good, any mention of EDS is good, but its not perfect. Salma was diagnosed at 5, and has been seeing the same physical therapist all her life. There are people who are diagnosed young and get immediate proper care... but this is extremely rare, especially with neither of her parents being diagnosed. She also has no co-occurring conditions, but a ton of random symptoms are attributed to EDS that seem more like comorbidity symptoms, like POTS or MCAS. Aversion to strong smells, random bursts of energy, nerve issues, headaches, ect. I do appreciate the inclusion of the condition, but I think it may paint a slightly unclear picture for people who are completely unfamiliar. It was a bit harder for me to relate to Salma with the slightly awkward descriptions of "EDS related" issues. I also couldn't find anywhere online if the author was writing from her own experience with EDS or not. The author is however a Muslim American which makes me feel that representation is fair and accurate, there were many details about that and the little ways her culture and religion are a part of her life.
