A Step Past Darkness

A Step Past Darkness

Vera Kurian

SIX CLASSMATES. ONE TERRIFYING NIGHT. A MURDER TWENTY YEARS IN THE MAKING… There’s something sinister under the surface of the idyllic, suburban town of Wesley Falls, and it’s not just the abandoned coal mine that lies beneath it. The summer of 1995 kicks off with a party in the mine where six high school students witness a horrifying crime that changes the course of their lives. The six couldn’t be more different. • Maddy, a devout member of the local megachurch • Kelly, the bookworm next door • James, a cynical burnout • Casey, a loveable football player • Padma, the shy straight-A student • Jia, who’s starting to see visions she can’t explain When they realize that they can’t trust anyone but each other, they begin to investigate what happened on their own. As tensions escalate in town to a breaking point, the six make a vow of silence, bury all their evidence, and promise to never contact each other again. Their plan works – almost. Twenty years later, Jia calls them all back to Wesley Falls—Maddy has been murdered, and they are the only ones who can uncover why. But to end things, they have to return to the mine one last time.

Idk if my expectations are too high because I’ve been told this book is AMAZING but so far I’m a bit bored 🙃

this one was a surprise to me; it didn't feel like Carley's other works had—it felt, to me, how people feel about Great Big Beautiful Life has felt like a letdown for some people, with how it didn't exactly feel like Emily Henry, how it was just different compared to her earlier works. this one is Carley's second earliest work, and yet, it almost feels like it was her debut novel, it felt that different to her other three novels that she's written so far.

i'm a sucker for second-chance so once i realized that's what this would be—i went into this one blind, i didn't know anything about it before i'd started it—but in this one, i just didn't care about either of the characters, their stories, or anything that happened to them. i was, quite frankly and devastatingly to me, bored, and even considered DNFing at 70%, but i had stupid hope that i would somehow grow more attached to fern and will during the last 30% (i didn't, obviously).

this one was just disappointing to me, and i find that i liked Every Summer After better compared to this one, and i hate cheating. i do still hold high hopes for her future releases, but this one was a miss.

I have never cried this much over a book. This book was hilarious and amazing from start to finish! I felt so connected and in love with these characters and their story. I mean, seriously a top-tier book. I adore how instead of an evil alien book, it was a book with so much friendship and love and humanity. I can't wait for the movie. Based on the trailers, I think they are going to do it justice and I can easily see Ryan Gosling doing a great job with the character. I know I'll be bawling my eyes out in the theater.

Mundane Magic: A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff Done

Mundane Magic: A Lazy Witch's Guide to Hacking Your Brain, Building a Daily Practice, and Getting Stuff Done

    Molly Donlan

Transform the mundane tasks of daily life into intentional moments of magical self-care, with spells, rituals, and exercises that work with your brain, not against it—from the co-host of the Demystify Magic podcast Are the dust bunnies and clutter in your house getting out of control? Do you put off cleaning your shower curtain or organizing your closet until you can’t ignore the mess anymore? Imagine turning these mundane chores into moments of magic, where sweeping the floor or folding laundry becomes an act of spiritual connection and enchantment. But how do we bridge the gap between the ordinary and the extraordinary? That’s where Mundane Magic comes in, to help you focus on the intention behind your actions and tap into everyday magic with simple rituals and mindful moments, like whipping together a coffee spell for abundance or clearing out the stagnant energy under your bed. Initially a skeptic herself, Molly Donlan’s journey took an unexpected turn when chronic hip pain led her to Reiki and the intersection of science and spirituality. She’s been where you are, overwhelmed by the weight of daily stress and household chores, but by injecting boring tasks with a sense of novelty and fun, she found magic practices that worked for her and her ADHD brain, rather than against it. Organized by rooms around the house and divided by the level of difficulty, Mundane Magic shares fun and actionable tips, exercises, spells, and rituals to create micro-moments of magic and motivation. You can organize your chores around the moon cycles to optimize cleansing and creativity, whip up an easy simmer pot for the motivation to tackle that pile of dirty dishes, or turn a minty shampoo into a spell for mental clarity. Mundane Magic offers a fun approach and empathetic support for productivity around the house and reclaiming joy and creativity in the process.

I loved One Golden Summer and Every Summer After so I was excited to read this book. It’s incredibly boring so far and I’m almost half way in. They better have a good reason for Will to have ghosted her for so long…

This book is getting worse but I can’t stop reading at the same time. Has the author never owned dogs before? Shannon reeks soooo bad because a few dogs jumped on her and licked her? Now Shannon is crying and screaming because she thinks there’s a ghost in Johnnys bed. Why is she acting like she’s 5 instead of 15. Give me a break 🙄 55% of the way through… I don’t think I’m meant to be reading about 15 yo weak FMCs

premise: this book isn't really my genre. In fact, although I didn't find it unpleasant to read overall, I can't give it a rating higher than 3 out of 5. that said, let's start with the negative aspects, which actually, it's just one: the writing 💀 at times, I wanted to tear my hair out. it felt like I was reading a high school essay. all those short sentences... I understand that when it's a first person narrator, it makes sense... but it was really too much. I hated the writing; it made reading really difficult. the other negative point is also related to the writing, but in terms of the descriptions. again, I understand that it's written in the first person, but there were a lot of completely unnecessary descriptions, especially in the first part of the book, which was really, I don't know...annoying? now let's move on to what I liked. the book covered various themes, but obviously the most obvious ones were the duration of love and missed opportunities. I appreciated how the theme was dealt with; I could fully understand how the protagonist felt during all the different periods of her life. when you leave something behind that you haven't resolved, you carry it with you, always. I liked the ending; it fit well with the pace of the book. this book is perfect if you are someone who broods a lot, who tends to bottle up their feelings until it's too late. it's an excellent source of insight.

Not really a fan of this writing style. The characters all ended up being irritating af. I feel like these types of stories that create sadness, trauma or just some sort of terrible event one after another are exhausting.
