This was one of the hardest books to read, its such a harrowing and depressing tale. Its an important one because these things did happen and history is very important but wow. The way that KH captures the despair, the cascade of events that lead to the Great Depression, the acts of survival that families have to make. Its a masterpiece of a story but it will also rip your heart out at the same time.

I must have blacked out during history lesson on the dust bowl bc I have been googling photos from that time period and uh wow, I dont understand how people survived honestly.

This was such an unexpected 6 star read.
🐴 Western romance with severe grumpy cowboy vibes. There's a level of suspense through it, delicious rugged vibes, the tight bond between the three brothers, tortured mmc with tragic background, found family, good spice, but moreso the emotional mature energy this man brought to the table? There's mention of how he goes to therapy and took meds for his depression. And despite the non communication on certain subjects because, bourbon and LIES, it still managed to show adult communication skills in many other ways and even the way the lies were untangled and responded to felt mature. I can't say enough how hot I find this in a romance 🙌. I truly did not expect how emotionally loaded this story was, combining that with the excellent banter (and the granddad was so funny too) it had a perfect balance.
The sisterhood that took place between our fmc and Hadley was very wholesome and individually I love their energy, but combined? They're so sassy and Iove it. The quotes: ’I’ve always excelled at putting small men back into the Polly Pocket-sized egos they’d earned.’ and just because I love her: “Laney, you didn’t need any rescuing. I wish I could have caught everything you said, because there is nothing more beautiful than watching a guy like that get verbally spanked.” describes our fmc her sass very well.
I have not a single bad thing to say about this book. Onto 2 we go 🤭.

Freaking hell, the intro of this book was written so achingly beautiful that i want to highlight everything. I just know this will be another heartbreaking one, what a way to start my year.
