What is even happening here 😯 We have a bite wound that’s stitched up, a ton of clues that make no sense yet, blacking out on purpose to escape something.
It’s been a while since I’ve read something that captured my curiosity so much so fast. Can’t wait to read what happens next.

I hate the relationship from Xaden and Violet. Both are red flags 🚩🚩🚩

Every time I reread this book, I love Lucien more. Lord knows I like a snarky political mastermind with a tragic backstory haha.

award for worst ending of 2025 is looking like it might be this one. ugh and this started off so so strong.
i know retellings are bounded by the constraints of the original story but this really fell apart. a lot of the messages and feminist themes were a little too on the nose for me and the phaedra storyline ended as a complete miss. for something so focused on the sisters and all their similarities/contrasts it was like the author didn’t know how to wrap it all together at the end and just threw in some elements of greek tragedy (cause everyone loves a tragedy; not sarcasm, i in fact do). and you know what phaedra’s whole post-naxos arc was a complete panicked mess and a departure from the story’s themes. and don’t get me started on the actual end which i can’t describe as anything other than random. there was no suffering of the shit bag men, i didn’t feel empowered as a woman, and i just felt disenchanted. [insert deep breathing exercises here]
the only reason this book didn’t get a lower rating/DNF is because the beginning was phenomenal. it was a complex approach to the minotaur and especially pasiphae. i also appreciated the contrasting experiences with motherhood, it rare that there is a decent depiction of post-partum depression and even just not desiring to be a mother. but after that it truly was a let down for me.

I read this one while on holiday in Crete. We even went to visit Knossos, where Ariadne lives in the beginning of the story.
Sadly that didn't help me get through this book. I had really high hopes, I love mythology retellings, but this one really didn't do it for me.
The characters all had a lot of potential, but to me they really lacked depth. Every time I thought they were about to get deeper into their feelings and motivations, it turned out flat.
They felt pretty cliché and one note to me, as if they couldn't break out of the mold of the singular thing each character was representing.
The message of the book is stated very literally, several times throughout the story, but I didn't feel it.
That actually sums it up: I didn't feel it. I was ready to be transported but it all stayed pretty superficial. Too bad.
