A note about the avoxes and how sometimes you read something at the right time.
I remember from my first read (and the first book) that the avoxes had their tongues cut out to keep them from speaking. I knew it was cruel, and I think I knew that it could prevent them from planning anything moving forward, but I don't think I realized just how symbolic it really was. To take away someone's ability to communicate, but really to take away their VOICE.
I think its hitting harder because I attended a talk earlier in the week where the speaker was losing her voice and commented that its very symbolic to the attempts to (politically) silence certain groups in the world today. It just reminds me that sometimes you read a book at the right time and it speaks to your soul. I think thats one of my favorite things about reading.

This is a decent middle-grade book with an interesting premise. Its clearly the start to a series, as there's not a ton going on but it does give a good introduction to the world.
The main characters are about 12-14 and are quite ambitious, even if it means breaking some rules.

This was a good sequel from Judica's perspective. It definitely made you see the way she was misunderstood by most people around her, and how perspective is so powerful. I liked the format switching between past and present, because it wasnt difficult to follow and weaved the new and old information together well. The concept of the Evians is so unique and I really appreciate how their abilities are utilized throughout the books, while still highlighting injustice and flaws in the society and characters.
