Mixed 26 for 2026
A mix of books (i.e. classics, fantasy, mystery, dark academia) I plan to prioritise for 2026. All Jane Austen ones will be re-reads for me.

"The Raven Scholar" definitely tries to do/include a lot: a detailed world, trials/tournament, world and court politics, murder mystery, social class, magic and supernatural beings, academia/school, a bit of romance, among others. But I'm not convinced that everything had to be in this world, or indeed tome. Although, I found some ideas and plot points interesting, others were full of tropes or eye-rolling repetative (especiially if you liked Malkovich in the 90s) and sometimes even nonsensical or too convenient (finding objects or escapes). The religion reminded me of "The Game of Thrones" one and the connected magic system provided resolutions as the story progressed without introducing such a possibilty in the system before.
Although, I enjoyed some characters, I feel that there was only one (maybe two) that was interesting and nuanced. The rest were very static, mostly morally one dimentional. The only major change kept me buffled by the apparently on-the-spot cliché 'bad' character reveal.
My expectations were very high due to certain online reviews, so likeliwise deep were my disappointments. Therefore, as a result, my rating may be influenced by both. Although, I cannot escape the impression that the author tried to squeeze as many previously successful tropes and ideas as possible, I will probably be continuing with the series, if only to see what happens to certain characters.

The story so far is rather generic, but very interesting world building, magic system (therefore I added one star to the plot) and incredible art.
