I loved everything about it. Particularly the writing and how raw the story and characters are. It made me feel lucky to be able to read it in my mother tongue, lucky to walk the streets of my beloved city through such beautifully literary eyes. I don't quite understand people questioning Lila and Lenú's friendship, the deep, layered and complicated but nonetheless real love they have for each other. I truly feel like the feeling is so all encompassing that even their jealousies are pure, even if they manifest themselves in mean and petty ways. I think we must remember, even if it's set in the past, even if society pushed them to move and act ahead of their age, they're still 16 and leaning about life and themselves.
I already know what happens next as I already watched the TV show, but I think it bears repeating: the Sarratore men ain't shit. You can already tell in this book, that Nino is gonna grow up to be just the same as his scumbag, piece-of-decomposing-garbage-left-to-lay-in-the-streets-underneath-the-August-sun father.
