A poignant historical romance that does not hide the harsh realities of slavery set during the American civil war. Difficult to read at times, but necessary if you want to learn. Totally engrossing, especially near the end. Am still worried about some characters though.
The author’s note also struck a chord, especially considering what happened since this book was published.

Hi everyone! I'll be studying in Bristol for a year starting in September and I don't know England (much less Bristol) at all, seeing as I've always lived in France.
Does anyone have advice on where to buy or borrow books there? I love all kinds of fantasy, romance, YA, sci-fi and sometimes thriller books!
I'd be happy connect if anyone else is there for next year :)

Bookriot has written an in depth article about the declining sales of historical romance with quotes from many well-known HR authors, like Mimi Matthews, Sarah Maclean, Joanna Shupe and Liana de la Rosa. I am a huge fan of historical romance and this trend of established HR authors being pushed into other genres by publishers makes me very sad. I also learned from this article that the mass market paperback is officially dead per the end of 2025. I knew this was happening (even Harlequins shifted to a larger format), but this also makes me very, very sad. I adore my large collection of mass market historical romances.
