Kit and Theo were once friends, then lovers, and now exes. Still smarting from the nuclear break-up, Theo decides to cash in on an unused ticket to a European food and wine tour. Turns out, Kit had the same idea. The Pairing follows two lost twenty somethings as they are forced to confront why they broke up, who they are, and who they want to be, all while they indulge their way across southern Europe. In true McQuiston style, the text is packed full of pop culture references and the most accurate depictions of what it’s like to be young, dumb, and queer I’ve ever read. Much like the wine Theo samples, the writing can be an acquired taste. I absolutely love the constant slang and crude references but I will have to always be careful who I recommend this book to, because I know it’s not to everybody’s taste. Beyond that, the travel writing was absolutely beautiful. I could taste the wine, smell the pastries, and feel that Mediterranean heat on every page. If not for the rampant horniness of the two main characters as they sleep their way through Europe, I would’ve made my travel loving mother read this. What impressed me even more was the growth of the characters, which added a depth I wasn’t expecting from such a sunny premise.I laughed, I cried, and by the end I wanted to by a plane ticket. An absolutely excellent read, I can’t wait for McQuiston’s next.

I keep hearing good things about this book, but i’m wondering how you all felt about the narration style. I read The Martian a while back and it felt like getting the story from a real bro over a couple of brewskies at the pub (which, nothing is wrong with that, it’s just not my preferred style). Curious to hear your thoughts! Ty
