i’m quite excited to start this, i started to count down the days after i put this on hold at the library. admittedly, i was hoping to start this before i watched rebecca (1940) but that unfortunately didn’t come to fruition. i really enjoyed the movie, though, so i hope i’ll enjoy the source material even more. i’m excited to dive back into this world and understand that characters more (rebecca, maxim, and mrs. danvers especially.) i’m also in a kinda sorta reading slump so i pray this will be the key out of that. fingers crossed!

Would it be possible to switch out King's Salem with 'Salem's Lot? Salem seems to be a french edition of 'Salem's Lot, which is the English name for the novel :)

Anyone else with OCD really struck by how relatable many of the thought processes were in this book? I actually found it difficult to deal with at times / a little triggering for my own irrational thoughts about my partner, but there's also something really lovely about finding parts of yourself in a book. Anyone else with relationship OCD in this boat?

I found this book very interesting and worthwhile to read, but its core lack of plot or narrative arc did lead to me feeling rather bored multiple times across a relatively short book. It's very Modern Madame Bovary, and I loved how the main character's thoughts were brought to life, but I did struggle with the aimlessness of it all. The final twist was fun, but I wanted to dwell in this new detail for longer than we were offered. Still worthwhile, though!

I really enjoyed this book. The multiple layers of narration unfold in really satisfying ways, the storyline is dense yet constantly action packed, and the assholeish narrator is actually fun and interesting to sit with. The final twist was genuinely surprising to me, and I was so happy with how rewarding this book felt to read!

I first read this in college and was stunned by the reaction most of my classmates had - they felt Eleanor was annoying and whiny and difficult to sympathize with. I, on the other hand, felt she was extremely relatable and deeply connected to her perspective and thoughts. What was your reaction to her narration/thoughts?
