I loved this - my first 5-star read of 2026! It's mind-bending cosmic horror, and it's also science fiction adventure. It rewards close (or re-) reading, the main characters (and Gua) are great, and the writing is artful.
One thing you should know: it's also a love story. Things sort of shift about halfway, and we get a new POV, but it still weaves back into the sci-fi bizarrerie, don't worry! And I liked that this had emotional heft as well as SCP-style fun.
I was really impressed with how the initial snippets educate you about this world and Marie's job, and craftily work together to help you understand the stakes and the rules without infodumping. My heart was pounding as I followed Lee's adventure, while it was also opening my mind to the unique challenges the Division faces.
I gave one tiny demerit because I think the ending leans hard into vibes rather than (in-universe) logical/scientific explanations, and that was a change-up I wasn't prepared for. Upon re-reading, I think it sticks the landing emotionally and gives enough plot logic to hang your hat on, though. So yes - overall 5 stars!

because it’s bothering me that Mrs Phillips referred to The Ugly Duckling, which was an original story by Hans Christian Andersen not published until the 1840s?
