This wasn’t Abby’s best, but I still enjoyed it. The barrier to a resolution lasted way too long, and I wanted to love these characters more than I did. Some really good bits, but some meh bits too.

MxFireBee commented on MxFireBee's review of Deerskin
Just re-read this and I'd forgotten how much I adore Robin McKinley. This book is dark but beautiful and there is so much beautiful metaphor for healing from trauma. Some of it is uncomfortable, but it's meant to be, because turning our eyes away from shadow doesn't eliminate it. It allows it to grow to imbalance. Facing our shadow story is where we find balance and healing and all of our aspects and stories combine to make us the selves we are in the present. This book is a sprawling metaphor for that process of eventually integrating our wounds with time and becoming something beautiful and steely on the other side.
