  • Overconsumption & books

I think for the most part people are pretty good at understanding overconsumption = bad. But when it comes to books and book related things, that mentality seems to go out the door. I’ve seen a lot of readers get super heated over having a vast collection of books, ereaders, accessories etc, and I just wonder-why? Booktok has seemingly turned reading and being a reader into an aesthetic, and I think a lot of people like the idea of it but more like the look or aesthetic of it (eg: book hauls).

I’ve done my best to cut down on purchasing books, I try to buy them second-hand, and I try to not buy anything when I have a ton to read…what do y’all think about this? *Not calling out anyone on this platform or any users or creators! *

  • What book made you a reader?

What book made you fall in love with reading? As a kid I caught the reading bug after reading books by Jacqueline Wilson and the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. As an adult I fell back in love with reading when I discovered romantasy and read Fourth Wing, ACOTAR, and From Blood and Ash.

  • Finding Books in Languages Other Than English

Hello wonderful readers! I've been seeing several posts where people talk about reading books in languages other than English, and I was wondering where I could find such books! My third language is Japanese and I need to up my proficiency ASAP, so I figured I could start by reading books in Japanese. I'm having a hard time finding books that are reasonably priced though (at this point it might be cheaper for me just to fly over to Japan and buy books there), so I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for places I could find such books without making my wallet cry. I'm fine with either print or digital

  • Thoughts on authors with large bodies of work (100+ books)?

I think I've realized that I have a bias against authors who have written a lot of books. In the title I said 100+, but even at 50+ I start to get a little sideye/skeptical about it, because I feel like how is it possible to write THAT many books and have them all be high quality? I'm specifically talking about authors who write full length novels for adults, because I think with short stories or children's books that's much more reasonable to publish loads.

    Anyone else??

  • Spooky Season Slump Ender

    Hello folks!

I have been in a bit of a reading slump the past couple weeks or so. I've been busy, life has been busy, I'm sure many of y'all understand.

Anyhow, I am planning to try and break that slump with spooky season!! I'm gonna try reading Strange Pictures by Uketsu! I picked up a copy shortly before my slump started. Looking forward to diving into it!

What are y'all reading this fine spooky season?

  • R.F. Kuang's hate

I'll preface this by coming forward as Kuang fan. I loved The Poppy War and Yellowface. Yes Kuang is pretty forward in her writing and tells you everything in the book. It's not my prefered style, but I'm a layperson in the subject she touches in her writing (ex.: China's occupation by Japan or traduction). It doesn't bother me and also understand that some people need to be punch in the face to understand... I mean some people still think Hunger Games is about a love triangle...

Any who, I am more than able to engage critically in a work and I appreciate when people engage with work I have loved. It offers a different perspective and allows litterature to bloom outside of the confinement of the book. Discussion is at the heart of any art form and whithout criticism it's rather pointless.

However, what gets me it's the unnecessary hate on her person... It reaks of mysoginy and racism. I don't understand the necessity to downplay her intelligence. She is undeniably intelligent and it cheapen any critic you can have to deny that. I also think it's interesting that she is criticed for being "too academic" when people keep complaining that we are in anti-intellectualism critic.

What are your thoughts? Are you seeing the same patterns I am seeing? Or am I blowing this out of proportion.

  • Authors that are politicians--thoughts?

Hey y'all so this past week I started a book without realizing until starting that the person is a state representative and I'm a bit uncomfortable because of certain things--specifically with a choice they made recently. But it made me wonder--do you find reading books by politicians (like Obama/Clinton) something you are comfortable with? Do you find it important to get their perspective?
