just finished chapter four and my initial thought while reading this as someone who bought this book when i was younger but never had the chance to read it until now (i’m twenty one) is that i’m finding it increasingly strange that ya authors have this obsession with making characters seventeen years old. obviously i understand that the target audience is young adult and yes this was not as big of an issue for me when i was also seventeen but the authors are all adults? idk i personally feel a bit strange reading these books where children are going through all these crazy things and more often than not also have like explicit scenes and stuff (sorry i know this is more of a general observation rather than six of crows specific). i also just think it adds nothing to the story… like okay kaz is this big bad boss and he’s so young, he still would have been incredibly young had he been in his twenties?? it also takes me out of the story a little bit because a twelve year old was simply not planning on how to take over some gang. the idea would have been portrayed just the same had he joined the gang when he was seventeen and is now twenty two or something like that. i’ve never really understood why it HAS to be seventeen. also ya is the genre, whether the characters are children or middle aged, you can still cater for that audience without forcing these unrealistic ages on your characters. of course if the characters are in a school setting or something i understand the necessity but i feel about this the same way i do about tv shows like euphoria and stuff like that, it just feels wrong! i’ve read many ya books where i can somewhat overlook this because the age is mentioned once and then never again so my brain automatically ages them up once i forget, but i’m not even five chapters in and every other page it mentions kaz and inej being seventeen oh my god 😭😭

I'm struggliiing with this book but I think it's just because I'm French and grew up in Paris and I feel like the author didn't do any research before writing a plot in Paris. I don't want to DNF it and I'll try a little more but I really hope the rest of the story is worth it.
