My favorite thing so far is how Tolkien’s writing feels like he’s talking directly to the reader. The entire prologue is catching the reader up on Hobbits and their culture and habits before beginning the story. He highlights how different they are from men and wants the reader to understand this. The book and all its detail are being presented like a grandfather telling you a story he’s told 100 times. It gives us a chance to feel like a hobbit sitting at Bilbo’s feet as he tells his story over and over.
