I was actually enjoying this to begin with but it's starting to become a drag. I think part of the issue is I already know how the story will end, it's very predictable because Austen's books have predictable endings. Don't get me wrong, Austen's characters are interesting and I love the social commentary, but plot wise it's a bit droll (to use her words) for me. I'm gonna force myself to keep going because I told someone I'd read it but... I don't know, hopefully something gets better about it? I know there's some plot twists coming up soon so we'll see how that goes.

I really did love this book. It's not the most pleasant read, but that's the point. It's not supposed to be. It's meant to show everything ugly and cruel and unjust that happens to black people and specifically black girls. However, the book shows how you find hope and comfort in those close couple of people who will always have your back and always love you. I think the book is pretty realistic with the way its characters were written and that ending. I also love the symbolism but also the way the author doesn't mind being blunt when it's necessary. Mottley is a very talented writer.

I hated the very little I read of this book with my entire soul. To not spoil this...book too much for anyone who wants to read it... It's nonconsensual and dubiously consensual yet there are no mentions or warnings for this whatsoever, usage of drugs to make people pass out and take advantage of them and in short... So, let's say you decided to mix Patrick's obsession with blondes and objectifying and sexualising the crap out of women's/female bodies from American Psycho with the cult element of Fight Club with those horribly written Wattpad fanfictions about a Mafia boss and the innocent girl he ends up having sex with. Yep. Gosh, Shantel Tessier, how do you write women so badly/in such a misogynistic way as a woman yourself? Yikes.
