Dreaded in symbolism and metaphor, this is an engrossing read with really interesting science fiction elements and social commentary. No wonder it's a classic.
Rarely books leave me sobbing after their conclusions, but A Monster Calls delivers series of gut punches one after another that even if you see coming, are still devastating.
A short and fairly uncomplicated book, it's easily read in a good few hours (I know it took me a month to sit down and finish it but shhh) and the book benefits from large reading sessions, allowing the impact of the story to take hold.
This impact is enhanced by this version of the book, that features gorgeous artwork ranging from simple scene-setting sketches of furniture to lavish double page spreads of dark monsters, detailed houses and other gothic set pieces. In tandem with the short length of the story, the art creates an intense atmosphere that adds to the drama of pivotal scenes.
Whilst not the most original book I've read recently, this is a fantastic novel through and through, with expressive art, a deeply impactful story and fantastic writing.
So much goodness! This series is so captivating, it's actually insane... And there's only two more volumes
