From the outside, this book is stunning—a true work of art. The cover is breathtaking, and its pages unfold a thought-provoking and deeply moving tale. While romance plays a role, the story leans heavily on political alliances, weaving a narrative of resilience and devotion. From the very beginning, the characters’ unwavering determination to protect their loved ones shapes their alliances and reflects societal expectations. “Those who have enough often forget those in need - not because they’re unkind - but because it makes them uneasy, evoking guilt, that they have so much while others, nothing. Life is inherently unfair...” “It is our burden and our blessing to be in a position to help.” The magic system is both creative and seamlessly integrated into the immersive world-building. Slow builds lead to brilliant plot twists, while the action sequences are concise yet impactful. The story delivers heart-pounding, tender moments, alongside displays of resilience and unwavering determination that I wholeheartedly admired. “Love is the greatest freedom in the world, but you have to be capable of yielding it, to grasp its true meaning.” The characters in these pages feel real and alive. Sue Lynn Tan has crafted complex, multidimensional individuals who embody the good, the bad, and the complicated aspects of human nature. Their thoughts and actions remain authentic and compelling, even in a fantastical world. “Heroes not born but made through their choices. One could be given the greatest gifts in the world and choose to do nothing with them. Or someone with nothing could forge their way to the pinnacle of power. Whether mortal or immortal, our destiny is in our hands.” If I had to nitpick, there were a few areas where the story could have used a bit more trimming. However, this remains the most beautifully written book I’ve read this year.
