Elle is quite possibly the most unlikeable main character I’ve ever read and because the entire story is told from her POV it’s inescapable.

For the first half of the story I was thinking maybe it’ll get better, because even though Elle is creepy and a pretty terrible person, I was kind of expecting some kind of character growth arc for her. From the halfway point it becomes apparent that her only capacity for change is to get even worse.

Also the whole ‘Winter Jacket’ thing from which the book takes its title, had the most anticlimactic, banal, utterly inconsequential, nothing reason behind it. My expectations were on the ground at that point and I was still disappointed.

The only reason I got as far as I did was because the narration by Angela Dawe carried it there. Bonus star for the narrator, she did a great job.
