3.5 stars. I found the story of the Scottish Women's Hospital very interesting (if a little dry), far more, really, than Jack and Eve's relationship which was just a relationship, like any other, except they were both women in a time when that was becoming less accepted (surprisingly to me as I didn't realise how blasé the public was about non-traditional relationships at the start of the last century, I thought it would have been even worse than it was in say the middle of the century when you could get arrested for engaging in 'lewd activity'). I was very interested in how many women in the SWH, and other female-lead aid organisations from during and after WWI, could have been considered lesbians (or maybe bi considering some of them went on to marry men). Jack especially seemed to have no trouble hooking up whenever a new female recruit arrived in the area. With the number of lesbian relationships Moore mentioned, it almost felt like the only women volunteering to serve overseas with an aid organisation were of the not-straight variety. I would be interested in reading more of Moore's non-fiction books.
