Wow!
I loved how I felt like I was learning so much while enjoying a dark academia fantasy adventure. The ending was crazy and not exactly what I wanted. When asked by a friend who wasn't interested in reading it how it ended I replied "Everybody died." and I had some regrets about that. My third Kuang read and my second five star, it seems she writes books I'm highly likely to love. I own the Poppy War trilogy and I can't wait to finally get around to reading it and I'm eagerly anticipating her next release.

Nope. I don't care about any of these women or their odd, competitive relationship with the protagonist, Zenia. At the moment I can't even muster enough enthusiasm or, more appropriately considering my current feelings, irritation to write a decent review discussing why this didn't work for me, so see Rain's review (on Goodreads) for more information.

I love historical fiction, I learn so much whenever I read it. I felt so sad for both girls - oh, Annie, but also I'm not sure how truly happy Vernice is by the end of the book. I felt sympathy for Annie's grandma and Vernice's aunt because it's so unfair that they were stuck in the situation of looking after children they hadn't planned on spending more than a decade looking after. I'm childless by choice and the idea of being forced to take in a child or face them being sent to an inhumane institution sounds like a the plot of a horror movie to me.
Apparently, my thoughts are kind of random today, so for a better review try this other Sarah's (on Goodreads) review, she is indeed a better Sarah in this case.
