Overall, this book is very informative. I learned so much that I wish were taught in schools. But now I know why they weren't taught in school.
The book is funny, tragic, heartbreaking, and uplifting at times. I enjoyed how Michael told the story. I was a lot more engaging that most history books that I've read in the past. By adding his life to the pages, it pulled you in more. There are a lot of good quotes in the book.
There were two things that really surprised me. In chapter 11, I saw my hometown in Longview, Texas, show up and was gutted by the brutality that happened. When your hometown shows up it hits different. Then, a few chapters later, Monroe, NC, showed up, which is where I currently live. This one was a little better because it had a badass protecting its citizens from the KKK.
I think this book should be required reading for all high schools.

Well that was a short lived high from chapter 11. Chapter 12 - I didn't expect to see my hometown of Longview Texas show up in this book. Again the stuff they don't teach us in school is amazing.

Chapter 11 was a fun read! I had a lot of fun learning about the women who played a huge part in helping change history in amazing ways. I like that the author also shared a list of other people to do some research on.
