In the story "The Three-Day Blow", our beloved Nick Adams is chatting with his good friend Bill (interesting how he shares a name with the token good friend Bill in The Sun Also Rises) chat about the success (or lack thereof) of the St. Louis Cardinals. Interesting to me that they would be Cardinals fans and not Cubs or White Sox or even Tigers fans. Alas: Nick ponders if the Cards will ever get a pennant, to which Bill responds "Not in our lifetime", which is intriguing to me for the specific reason that the first time the Cardinals DID in fact win a pennant (and the subsequent World Series) was 1926-- just one year after this book was first published. Of course, our boy Hemingway would have had no way to see into the future, but I do find it fun that despite their disillusionment (with baseball and otherwise), Nick and Bill, were they real, really would see a pennant win in their lifetime.

Whether you love to hate or hate to love 'em, these literary bad girls are anything but well-behaved. *Disclaimer: we do not literally support the illegal and oft cruel behavior of these protagonists (usually); we support the authors bold enough to write them (always).
