hey! wanted to pop this in here to hopefully help any future readers as this is set in an english school setting which seems to be (understandably) confusing people that aren’t from here with the ages, classes, and exams etc.
if there’s any more questions pls add and any PBers from here can help with answers🫶
Secondary school: Year 7 aged 11-12 Year 8 aged 12-13 Year 9 aged 13-14 (picking GCSE subjects) Year 10 aged 14-15 (GCSE’s) Year 11 aged 15-16 (GCSE’s)
College or sixth form: Year 12 aged 16-17 (A Levels) Year 13 aged 17-18 (A Levels)
eta: i’m from England so if the set up is different in Scotland, Wales, NI (part of UK) and ROI (sovereign country not part of the UK) please let me know how, really interested to see if there’s a difference✏️

Hey!! From Scotland here and haven’t read the book yet but we’ve a near completely different school system. Primary school goes from p1-p7, so our year 7 is still in primary! Secondary school: S1- 11/12 S2- 12/13 S3- 13/14 (start of the National Years- N4= no exams) S4- 14/15 (National 4/5’s are done in April/May- our GCSE equivalent, you sit an exam for your Nat.5’s) S5-15/16 (National 5’s if sat National 4 the previous year. Otherwise you sit your Highers- you can crash a higher if you’ve got pretty good grades!) S6- 16/17 (N4/5/Highers or Advanced Highers, which are an equivalent to your first year of Uni) You can leave school at 16 as legally you are recognised as an adult and no longer in need of formal education if you don’t want it. Depending on when in the year you are born some people leave in S4 to start working/. I left in S5 with my N5’s from S4 and my Highers. Technically I left when I was 16, but by the time September came around and I started at uni I was 17!
